CERTAIN Presented at the Martigny Biometric Workshop: Advancing Trustworthy Biometrics Under the EU AI Act

On May 19–20, the Idiap Research Institute and IDEMIA represented the CERTAIN Project at the Martigny Biometric Workshop, organised by the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) in Martigny, Switzerland.

The workshop brought together key players in the field of biometrics to explore the evolving challenges and regulatory landscape shaping the sector. As part of this dialogue, CERTAIN was presented as a forward-looking initiative addressing core concerns in the development and deployment of biometric technologies, including:

  • Privacy and privacy preservation
  • Bias and fairness in AI systems
  • Trustworthiness and fraud resistance
  • Compliance with the EU AI Act

A dedicated session, “Biometrics under the AI Act,” provided valuable insights into how upcoming regulations are likely to affect the use and governance of biometric technologies. Participants discussed risk classifications, real-world use cases, and implementation strategies aligned with ethical and legal standards.

The session concluded with a round-table discussion, where experts compared AI regulatory scenarios in Europe and the United States. The exchange was well received by participants, offering clarity on complex compliance issues and highlighting international perspectives.

The CERTAIN project is proud to be contributing to these important discussions as we work toward building a future where biometric and AI technologies are not only innovative but also transparent, accountable, and aligned with European values.
